'Stop Rodney Power Station' campaign

Genesis Energy is proposing to build a 480MW gas-burning baseload power station in Kaukapakapa. The joint ARC/RDC hearing for Genesis Energy's resource consent, plan change and variation applications concluded on 31 October 2008. Dr Neville Miller, Bruce Cowan and Pip McAlwee gave a three and a half hour presentation to the hearing panel on 6 October. A further submission from KARRA, responding to supplementary evidence from Genesis Energy, was presented to the hearing panel on the final day of the hearing.

The six commissioners are expected to release their decision(s) by early December. KARRA will then hold a special public meeting to gauge if there is community support for KARRA becoming involved in any appeal to the Environment Court. Kaukapakapa Structure Plan

Update from KARRA's Structure Plan Committee- November 08

The community was informed at a public meeting some months ago that the Rodney District Council had appointed RMS consultants to take over from the committee, with a brief to complete the Structure Plan process for Kaukapakapa. The work would be carried out in three phases.

Phase 1: The Stocktake Phase, including Background Research and Constraints and Opportunities Research, has been undertaken and completed, and in early September the committee received a draft report of that phase. The report was studied by the committee and we were pleased to see that a lot of the work that had been undertaken by the committee had been of immense value.

The outcome of the report clearly defined the Structure Plan boundary and how it was achieved. The committee approved the report and conveyed our acceptance to both RDC and RMS. The report has now been signed off by RDC staff. A copy of this report is available from the committee to read but remains the property of KARRA.

Phase 2: The Visioning Phase - negotiations have now been completed between RDC and RMS for the next phase. We are a little behind time-wise, however we are pleased that the process is underway. There will be a further workshop to be held for the community to assist and offer their views. This will be notified in due course.

We look forward to your constructive support in the ongoing development of Kaukapakapa.

River: Clean up and access group

Though it is hard to visualize the river actually has a rocky bottom in the past it was a clear flowing stream.

  • We need to revitalize the river and it’s environment so all can enjoy exploring it’s banks and habitat (KARRA is having ongoing discussions with RDC regarding cleaning of the river)
  • We have identified a possible all-tide boat ramp location and associated possible passive park within walking distance of the Village
  • Cleaning the river is important for ongoing flood mitigation and essential to future public usage

Walkways: Action group

Following last years KARRA public meeting and surveys, it was very clear one of the main wishes of Kaukapaka residents was for a safe walkway or linkway between North & South parts of the village. KARRA is now very pleased to announce that we have an Action Group specifically targeting what is needed to get this walkway happening. The project would in all likelihood take several years to complete the entire wish list, which includes river walkways, bridle paths, a complete loop around the valley. To start with, the focus will be on completing access from the shops in the north to Sinclair Park in the south, providing a path for foot traffic, cycleway and bridle path.
